GERMAN OFFICE FOR THE PROTECTION OF ARTISTIC MATERIAL OF THE ADRIATIC LITTORAL (UNTERABTEILUNG KUNST UND DENKMALSCHUTZ)
The German Office for the Protection of Artistic Material of the Adriatic Littoral (Unterabteilung Kunst und Denkmalschutz) carried out mainly three activities: the protection of assets from war damage, an intense documentary campaign, both written and photographic, and the management of problems connected to the seizure of Jewish properties of artistic value.
At the head of the section was placed Walter Frodl, director of the Reichsgaumuseum of Klagenfurt; the other members were Erika Hanfstaengl, Hans Dolenz, Anton Nicolussi-Moretto and Edith Koch, Frodl´s secretary.
The section responded directly to the High Commissioner Rainer and later, only for administrative matters, was subordinated to Section V Science and Education (Abteilung V Wissenschaft und Unterrich).
The Unterabteilung Denkmalschutz was charged with protecting the altar of Mortegliano with the famous Martini altarpiece, eventually authorizing the transfer to a safe place.
