RAINER, FRIEDRICH (Sankt Veit, Carinzia, 1903 - Belgrado, 1947)


High Commissioner of the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral, Governor of Carinthia


Member of the Nazi party since 1930, Friedrich Rainer became Governor (gauleiter) and Lieutenant of Carinthia in 1941. From 1943 to 1945, he assumed the position of High Commissioner of the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral, included in the Reich and including the provinces of Trieste, Gorizia, Udine, Istria, Carnaro and Ljubljana. Rainer entrusted the task of determining the provisional measures for the protection of movable and immovable artistic heritage in the Adriatic Littoral to Walter Frodl, Director of the Reichsgaumuseum of Klagenfurt and thus placed at the head of the Abteilung Denkmalschutz.
