First a deposit, then a military command

“Si prende in consegna il castello Segré-Sartorio a Spessa e si trasporta all´accentramento a mezzo ditta Roiatti con autofurgone e rimorchio: N. 80 casse di proprietà dei Principi di Torre Tasso del Castello di Duino, N. 7 casse di proprietà Segré-Sartorio.” (18 luglio 1940)

The Castle of Spessa, owned by the family Segré-Sartorio of Trieste, was initially considered as a possible location as collecting point. After 1943 it became seat of a SS Command. On April 8, 1944 Silvio Rutteri, director of the Civic Museum Revoltella in Trieste, was compelled to delivered the Supreme Commissioner for the Adriatic Littoral “seven oil paintings with golden frames” in order to temporarily decorate the castle. Except for one, all artworks were returned to the Museum.
